In accordance with national and continental goals, Namibia seeks to become a developed country with inclusive growth and sustainable development. At the core of this is responsible yet effective use of its natural resources to the benefits of its citizens for economic growth and prosperity.

Green hydrogen, an energy source created using renewable energy could be the means to achieving these goals through the revitalization of industry and employment creation while achieving carbon neutrality.

Namibia is endowed with natural resources with world class potential for renewable energy through solar and wind, pre-conditions for ‘green’ hydrogen production.

Namibia seeks to explore the production of green hydrogen. The Green Hydrogen Initiative potentially has immense environmental, educational, economic and social impacts for Namibia.

The Harambee Prosperity Plan II (HPPII) outlines plans for Namibia to invest in green hydrogen as a key component in the country's goals towards the attainment of zero emissions in favour of a green environment and sustainable development .
The national Green Hydrogen initiative is also expected to create new industries and jobs thereby accelerating Namibia’s economic growth.

VISION

This vision of the NGHRI is to advance the frontiers of green hydrogen science and promote Namibian economy through research and development of hydrogen as an energy source.

MISSION

This vision will be realized through research and development, training of skilled and versatile workforce capable of innovating in energy and new materials, culminating in the establishment of hydrogen production industry, storage, delivery, and usage infrastructure in Namibia.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the NGHRI is to function as a distributive Science and Technology Park for university-industry-government consortia to perform R&D, capacity building, promote entrepreneurship and commercialization of innovative projects for the advancement and large-scale sustainable production of Green Hydrogen and Ammonia.

NGHRI STAFFING

The Institute comprise of national and international academics, researchers, specialists/experts and students from the higher education sector, research institutions, government and the private sector.

The higher education sector comprises of Universities, Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions (TVETs), colleges and training institutions.

The human resources of the Institute are:

• Specialized research clusters with academics and researchers
• Postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows
• International visiting and exchange scholars and students
• Government seconded experts
• Industry seconded experts
• Professional support staff

In addition to close collaboration with the National Green Hydrogen Council, the Institute further collaborates closely with government Offices/Ministries/Agencies and private sector partners.

International academic and research institutes as well as private sector collaboration is already being pursued.
